Welcome to the History of Fitzhugh Baptist Church!

Fitzhugh is a historic community with a valued and rich past and tradition.  The community was first founded according to the Texas State History Museum as a cattle drive around the then thriving State Capital sometime in the mid 1860's to 1870's.  From its strategic location just 15 miles from Austin city limits a hardy and brave souls braved these historic hills and valley's to tend the farms, vineyards and countryside.

Our little church on the other hand had a much more recent founding.  The State Records indicate that Harriet and R.L. Batts and granted Pleasant Hill Baptist Church the current land and cemetery in 1914. (See the State records of the Land Deed here!) There is evidence that Cottonwood Baptist Church was an earlier predecessor of community of believers that would eventually become Fitzhugh Baptist Church.  The small Cottonwood Church has nothing remaining but the Church minutes that still remain in the Library of Fitzhugh Baptist church.  The minutes indicate that small body of believers were founded in 1905.(A Transcription of Cottonwood's founding Charter and other historic Fitzhugh documents can be found Here!  However, lets begin with our current location the historic record is clear that Pleasant Hill Baptist Church was located at the present location of Fitzhugh Baptist Church since approximately June of 1914.  From it's humble beginnings the hard working folks built a small sanctuary, a tabernacle and fellowship grounds on location and at the location of the parsonage today!   In 1941 the fellowship added onto their first Sanctuary and dedicated a new larger Sanctuary!    This is a link to the front cover of the dedication bulletin! (Note this is in reverse due to the type of copier used to duplicate the bulletin) This is the Inside Cover of the Bulletin!  The little church continued to reach the community and in the 1960's the little church had a mission from there pastor and agreed upon by the body of believers!

In the 1970's the small community church bound together and built the current sanctuary. This new facility houses approximately 150 congregants and maintains an indoor heated baptistery, (quite an improvement over the in the creek baptisms from before!) The new fellowship has continued to grow and minister.  The most recent addition was a new Family Life Center dedicated by our current pastor Bro. John B. McCullough in 1996.  This spacious gymnasium, kitchen and learning center holds Wednesday and Sunday classrooms, functions, sports and prayer events!  The lovely kitchen has served many a warm meal to the community over the 7 years.  This new building was built with loving care by many of the members and volunteers from the Texas Baptist Men and other volunteers.  Currently their are approximately 450 members on the roll with an average Sunday morning Sunday School attendance of 75 to 85 members weekly.  The services generally average 115 to 125 people weekly with the largest service coming once a month during Dinner on the Grounds when the community is invited to fellowship and eat a meal after Sunday morning service.
